This botanical garden was established during the Bunka and Bunsei eras (1804–1830), a flourishing time for Edo's popular culture, by a curio dealer from Sendai named Kikuya Sahara. Unlike the grand feudal gardens like Koishikawa Korakuen or Rikugien, it was created by leading figures of the era and features a more familiar, common touch, with flowers blooming throughout the seasons. In autumn, the garden's maples and ginkgo trees turn brilliant colors. Designated as a national place of scenic beauty and historic site in 1978, the garden glows with the changing hues of wax trees, cherries, ginkgo, and maple as autumn deepens.
