Autumn Foliage at Kita-in Temple
November 21 – December 10, 2026
Kita-in Temple in Kawagoe, Saitama, was founded in 830 by the Buddhist monk Ennin and is a historic temple of the Tendai sect, also known as Kawagoe Daishi. From late November to early December, the spacious grounds are adorned with vibrant red and yellow leaves from maple and ginkgo trees. The temple features several nationally designated Important Cultural Properties, including guest and study halls relocated from Edo Castle, as well as the main gate, Jigan Hall, and bell tower gate. Visitors can enjoy a picturesque blend of autumn foliage and historic architecture while strolling the grounds, which are accessible free of charge. With admission, you can also tour the guest hall and the collection of 500 Rakan statues. In conjunction with the season, the Koedo Kawagoe Chrysanthemum Festival takes place from November 1 to November 23, displaying around 300 chrysanthemums at a special venue. The temple is within walking distance from the traditional storehouse district, making it a popular destination combined with a walk through historic Kawagoe.
