Legend has it that the head of Oda Nobunaga, said to have died at Honno-ji Temple in Kyoto, is actually buried at the base of a 500-year-old holly tree in the grounds of Nishiyama Honmonji Temple, by order of Honyinbo Sansa (Nikakai Shonin). A memorial mound marks the site. Each November, as the grand ginkgo tree in the temple grounds turns yellow, the Nobunaga Gingko Festival is held in honor of this legend. Events include a memorial service for Nobunaga, ritual dances, fan performances, the 'Nobunaga Conquest Dance', sword demonstrations, matchlock gun displays, and more. Along the approach to the temple, visitors can also enjoy a lively market featuring food and local products.
