A major exhibition exploring the legacy of 'The Tale of Genji', written by Murasaki Shikibu during the Heian period, through rare paintings, crafts, and manuscripts. Visitors can experience the enduring beauty inspired by the story, from ancient handwritten scrolls and illustrated depictions of its scenes to lacquerware and kimono designed with Genji motifs. Highlights include the National Treasure 'The Tale of Genji Illustrated Scrolls', considered the oldest existing Genji illustrations, with the Tokyo venue showcasing different scenes such as 'Kashiwagi III', 'Takekawa II', 'Azumaya I', and 'Miyagi', offering a contrast to the Kyoto exhibition. In addition, the Tokyo exhibition features ukiyo-e and other works showing the influence of the story during the Edo period. Exhibits will change partway through the run, providing new experiences depending on the timing of your visit.
