Autumn Foliage at Jomyoji Temple
Jomyoji Temple is a Buddhist temple in Kamakura, Kanagawa Prefecture. Founded in 1188 by Yoshikane Ashikaga, a senior retainer of Minamoto no Yoritomo, and the high priest Taiko Gyoyu, it is ranked fifth among the Five Great Zen Temples of Kamakura and is also registered as a tangible cultural property by Kamakura City. Although it was once a large temple complex, fire and other events have reduced it to a smaller site with a main gate, main hall, guest hall, and kitchen. The temple is known for its beautiful peonies in spring and plum blossoms in winter, but its autumn foliage is a particular highlight. Tall trees surrounding the copper-roofed main hall turn brilliant shades of red and yellow in the fall. The on-site teahouse, Kisen-an, offers matcha green tea for a fee.
