Autumn Foliage at Happo-en
November 11 – December 31, 2026
Happo-en in Shirokanedai, Minato Ward, is a traditional stroll garden with over 400 years of history, dating back to the early Edo period. Spanning about 10,000 square meters, the garden features around 160 maples along with ginkgo, zelkova, and wax trees that put on a colorful autumn display from mid-November to late December. Early in the season, the vibrant reds and yellows stand out against the lush greenery, and by mid-December, the landscape is awash in shades of crimson and gold. The garden includes teahouses and gazebos, and visitors can stroll along the paths to enjoy reflections of the foliage on the pond. After renovations, the main building is set to fully reopen in October 2025, with the main lobby offering sweeping glass views of the garden’s autumn colors.
