Centennial Exhibition: Exploring the Monumental Murals of the Meiji Memorial Picture Gallery

This special exhibition commemorates the 100th anniversary of the Meiji Jingu Gaien and focuses on the massive murals of the Meiji Memorial Picture Gallery, which depict the achievements of Emperor Meiji and Empress Shoken. Out of the 80 murals, six original works will be displayed, with two shown in each segment of the exhibition (early, middle, and late periods). The exhibition also features works by the mural artists, preparatory studies, sketches, and reference drawings created for the murals. The murals on display include 'Imperial Visit to Tomioka Silk Mill' and 'Restoration of Imperial Rule' in the first period, 'Emperor's Visit to the Tokugawa Residence' and 'Emperor's Visit to the Iwakura Residence' in the second, and 'Promulgation of the Constitution' and 'Battle of Mukden in the Russo-Japanese War' in the third period. Visitors can closely view these artworks, which offer insights into both Meiji-era history and the artistic process behind the murals.
