Sairenji Temple, a Tendai Buddhist temple founded in 782, is home to two massive ginkgo trees believed to be over 1,000 years old. With trunks about 8 meters in circumference and reaching heights of 27 meters, these ancient trees are designated as a natural monument of Ibaraki Prefecture. In late November, the temple grounds are blanketed in golden ginkgo leaves, creating a stunning carpet-like effect. Next to the giant ginkgo trees stands the important cultural property, the pagoda finial, a symbol of the Tendai sect.
