Autumn Foliage in the Oku-Kuji Valley
November 1–20, 2026
Free entry
Oku-Kuji, located along the Kuji River in Ibaraki Prefecture—famous for its clear water and excellent ayu (sweetfish)—features scenic valleys where National Route 118 and the JR Suigun Line run in parallel. The Daigo area, at the heart of Oku-Kuji, is especially beautiful from early to mid-November, when the maples, sawtooth oaks, and other trees paint the mountains with vibrant autumn colors. The valleys stretching along the upper and middle sections of the Kuji River are particularly striking, offering a dramatic contrast between the clear, flowing river and the fiery hues of the changing leaves. The vast landscapes, dyed red and yellow, are truly awe-inspiring.
