Autumn Foliage at Daitoin Temple
November 21 – December 10, 2026
Free entry
Founded in 1411 by the Zen master Joson Jocho, this historic Soto Zen temple has over 3,400 branch temples across Japan. The grounds are home to legends such as the Eternal Flame, the Heir’s Pestle, and the Sand of the Sacred Boundary. The temple buildings are nestled among dense woodland, and the elevated main hall offers sweeping views of the vibrant autumn leaves. At the entrance is the grave of Ishimatsu Mori, a follower of the famous chivalrous outlaw Jirocho Shimizu, which draws visitors praying for good luck and business success. The temple is a tranquil, tradition-rich space surrounded by nature—perfect for peaceful walks and soaking in the atmosphere. Each autumn, many photographers visit to capture the spectacular fall colors. Ishimatsu Mori’s gravestone, said to bring luck in gambling, has been worn away and replaced several times; pieces of the original stone are even sold as good luck charms.
