Yasaka Shrine Grand Kagura Performance (November)
November 23, 2026
This Izumo-style kagura, a form of sacred music and dance, has been performed since the Edo period after being passed down from Kanda Myojin Shrine in Edo (now Tokyo). It takes place at the shrine's kagura hall every year: once during the Spring Festival (last Sunday of February) and again at the Autumn Festival (November 23). Traditionally, kagura was dedicated to gain divine power, seeking protection from disasters, epidemics, and to pray for a bountiful harvest and peace. On March 22, 1968, it was designated an Important Intangible Cultural Property by the city of Utsunomiya.
