New Year's Visit to Katori Shrine
January 1–3, 2027
As the head shrine of over 400 Katori shrines across Japan, Katori Shrine is one of the nation's most esteemed religious sites, having received the prestigious title of 'Jingu' alongside Ise and Kashima prior to the Meiji era. Its distinctive shrine complex—featuring interconnected main, inner, and worship halls built in the Gongen-zukuri style—boasts beautiful cypress bark roofs in deer-hide hues and a striking black lacquer finish. Surrounded by ancient cedars, cherry trees, and maples, the grounds exude a solemn atmosphere and have recently gained popularity as a spiritual power spot. During the first three days of the New Year, approximately 500,000 worshippers visit for hatsumode (the first shrine visit of the year).
