During the Edo period, the Minato area, facing the sea and situated along the Tokaido route connecting Kyoto, Osaka and Edo, was home to people engaged in a wide variety of occupations. Alongside fishers, there were those who transported goods by boat or ox, worked at teahouses serving travelers, or provided goods and services to samurai households. Through ukiyo-e prints depicting working people, historical documents and other materials, this exhibition explores occupations connected to the sea, the Tokaido and daimyo residences. Discover jobs that still exist today, those that have changed over time and others that have long disappeared.
