Special Exhibition: 900 Years of Chiba—Bridging Time through Art Depicting the Moon and Stars
September 16 – November 23, 2026
¥1,500
This special exhibition celebrates Chiba’s 900th anniversary by showcasing around 150 artworks themed around the moon and stars, symbols of the city, spanning from early modern paintings to contemporary art. Focusing on local Myoken beliefs and humanity’s relationship with the celestial, the exhibit traces artistic expressions through a wide variety of works. Alongside ukiyo-e, Edo-period paintings, and antique celestial maps and globes from China, Japan, and the West, visitors can also view original pieces by contemporary artists. Highlights include the first display after restoration of Harukei Taoka’s over-8-meter-wide former mural 'Appearance of the Myoken Deity,' and a large-scale installation 'Heaven on Earth' by Tatsuo Miyajima.
