Born in Saitama in 2000, Machi Sugita's work has long imagined an ideal world illuminated by the lights created by people and the signboards that guide them. In recent years, the practice has turned toward social issues in Japan and the idea of borders, with the artist traveling to different regions to explore the memories and histories embedded in each place, as well as the relationships between people, animals and plants. Building on the 2025 solo exhibitions, this exhibition marks a further development of this ongoing inquiry. The exhibition brings together new paintings that weave together fragments of landscapes encountered during these journeys into a single image. As the works reconsider the meaning of borders, they also evoke neon lights stretching endlessly into the distance like a path of hope, while inviting viewers to reflect on the realities concealed behind their glow.
