Created in 1842 by Tokugawa Nariaki, the ninth lord of the Mito Domain, Kairakuen is celebrated as one of Japan’s three most famous gardens, alongside Kenrokuen in Kanazawa and Korakuen in Okayama. Located in central Mito, the garden features seasonal plants that provide beautiful views throughout the year. The Maple Valley area, part of Kairakuen’s expansion, is especially known for its vibrant autumn foliage. Around 170 colorful maple and Japanese maple trees delight visitors during peak season, and the reflection of the autumn leaves on the pond in Maple Valley adds to the enchanting atmosphere, offering a true sense of the changing seasons.
