Irohazaka (Nikko) Autumn Foliage
October 11 – November 10, 2026
Free entry
This approximately 16-kilometer mountain road connects central Nikko city with Lake Chuzenji and Oku-Nikko, and is recognized as one of Japan’s top 100 roads. The route consists of two one-way roads—one for descending and the other for ascending—with a total of 48 sharp curves. You can enjoy vibrant autumn leaves from your car as the foliage spreads across the mountain slopes. The elevation difference of about 440 meters offers spectacular views as the autumn colors move down the mountainside. Panoramic views of the Kanto Plain can be enjoyed from the Kurokamidaira and Akechidaira lookout points. From Akechidaira, you can take a ropeway (currently closed for renovations until late July 2027) up to an observation deck for sweeping views of Mount Nantai and Lake Chuzenji.
