Five Points of Architecture

Hagiso in Tokyo's Yanaka district will host an exhibition by five graduate students in Western architectural history at the University of Tokyo. The exhibition asks a simple question: How can architecture become a way of seeing the world? Rather than presenting finished research, the exhibition turns its attention to what comes before it. Through photographs and sculptural works, the five participants share what catches their eye, the questions that spark their curiosity and the ways they make sense of architecture and the city. These individual perspectives are the starting point of their research. Architectural history may seem like a specialized field, removed from everyday life. Yet our research begins with something familiar: walking through the city, looking closely at buildings and wondering, Why was it built this way? How have people lived here over time? This exhibition opens up the interests and observations that exist before they take the form of academic research, offering a glimpse into the ways architectural historians begin to read the world. Looking closely at architecture can lead to unexpected encounters with unfamiliar periods, societies and ways of life.
