Special Exhibition: Painter Toru Kono – Illustrating Stories
Saturday, December 12, 2026
This exhibition highlights the career of Toru Kono, an artist active from the Meiji to Showa periods, with a focus on his works themed around 'stories.' Kono often used biblical tales as subjects, producing a wide range of works from richly imaginative illustrations to finely detailed oil paintings. Inspired by his favorite magazine 'Shirakaba,' he began creating illustrations and book designs for literary works, including illustrations for Saneatsu Mushanokoji’s novel 'Ihara Saikaku' during its newspaper serialization. The exhibition spotlights the story worlds brought to life by Toru Kono, whom Yoshirou Nagayo called an 'imaginative painter.'
