Autumn Leaves at Hondoji Temple
Passing through an avenue lined with ancient pine and cedar trees, said to have been donated by Tokugawa Mitsukuni, and entering through the temple gate, visitors are greeted by about 1,000 maple trees blazing in vibrant red. The combination of autumn foliage with the five-story pagoda, temple gate, and covered walkways creates a picturesque scene that draws many visitors. The leaves typically begin to change color in mid-November. Notable trees include the Osakazuki maples and wild Shuzanko maples, named after Lady Akiyama, a concubine of Tokugawa Ieyasu, whose grave is located nearby.
