Autumn Foliage at Kirifuri Falls, Nikko
Kirifuri Falls is counted among Nikko’s three most famous waterfalls, along with Kegon and Urami Falls. The waterfall, spanning the Kirifuri River, cascades in two tiers with a total drop of about 75 meters. Its name, meaning 'misty falls,' comes from the way the water scatters like mist as it strikes the rocks. During autumn, maple and other trees around the falls turn brilliant shades, and visitors can admire both the vivid foliage and the full panorama of the falls from scenic viewing platforms. The spectacular landscape was even captured by renowned Edo-period ukiyo-e artist Katsushika Hokusai.
