Special Exhibition: Boat Models Narrating Ota Ward's Nori Cultivation
Tuesday, April 21, 2026
In December of Showa 37 (1962), the history of seaweed cultivation in Ota Ward came to an end due to the completion of port improvements at Tokyo Port and the relinquishing of fishing rights. The boats were discarded or resold and disappeared from people's lives. However, inspired by the desire to preserve the memory of the seaweed town, shipbuilders and skilled artisans crafted exquisite ship models, which have been kept at former seaweed producers' homes and public facilities. This exhibition showcases these ship models, along with photographs from the bygone era, collected and preserved by Ota Ward.
