Daniel Ost in Kamakura at Kakuenji – Sculpting Autumn with Flowers
November 12–17, 2026
Free entry
From November 12 to 17, 2026, Kakuenji Temple in Nikaido, Kamakura, will host 'Daniel Ost in Kamakura', an exhibition by celebrated Belgian flower artist Daniel Ost, renowned as a 'flower sculptor'. This marks Ost's first-ever exhibition in Kamakura, and his first large-scale show in Japan since 2019. The main venue is the former Utsumi family farmhouse, a historic thatched-roof building dating back to the Edo period and relocated to the temple grounds. Over 30 floral sculptures will be displayed, crafted using natural materials such as autumn leaves, nuts, and branches collected from mountains around Kamakura and other regions of Japan. Highlights include works made with traditional materials from across Japan, such as sacred ropes crafted by the Suga Shimenawa Preservation Society from Shimane Prefecture, rushes from Kumamoto Prefecture, and stone flower vases from the coast of Shimane. Starting at 4:30 pm daily, the exhibition will be illuminated, allowing visitors to enjoy the artworks lit against the mountain backdrop at dusk. Daniel Ost is scheduled to be present at the exhibition throughout its duration. Tickets are 4,000 yen in advance, 4,500 yen at the door (tax and temple admission included), and free for children under middle school age. Part of proceeds will support the preservation of temple cultural assets. Advance tickets are available through Eplus, FamiPort, and the event office.
