October 17 – November 30, 2026
¥800
Founded in the Muromachi period by local lord Masatsuna Kiryu, Hotoku Temple is a Zen temple in Kiryu, Gunma Prefecture. The main hall features striking ink paintings of twin dragons on sliding doors, and in front of the hall is a serene rock and sand garden that expresses the beauty of nature. Hotoku Temple is also known for its wide variety of goshuin (temple stamps). The temple hosts various events throughout the year, with its especially rare and famous 'floor maple' displays: Over 100 maple trees turn a brilliant red in autumn, their vibrant colors mirrored by the polished wooden floors inside. In spring, delicate peonies bloom on the grounds, and in summer, visitors can enjoy a tunnel of wind chimes.
