Autumn Foliage at Shima Onsen
October 11 – November 20, 2026
Free entry
Nestled in the mountains of Nakanojō, Gunma Prefecture, Shima Onsen is a hot spring town lined with inns and shops along the Shima River gorge. Every year from mid-October to mid-November, the surrounding mountains turn vibrant shades of red and yellow as Japanese maples, painted maples, zelkova, oak, and spicebush trees change color. The varying elevation creates a staggered foliage season: areas like Hinatami and Yuzuriha peak in late October, while Shinyu, Yamaguchi, and the hot spring entrance area are best viewed in early November. At the far end of the town lies Okushimako Lake, formed by the Shimagawa Dam, where the cobalt-blue water—known as 'Shima Blue'—contrasts beautifully with the colorful slopes. Designated as Japan’s first national health resort in 1954, this historic hot spring destination also offers the pleasure of strolling past wooden buildings while enjoying the autumn leaves.
