41st Shibayama Haniwa Festival at Tonozuka–Himezuka Burial Mounds, Shibayama Niōson Temple, and Shibayama Park

41st Shibayama Haniwa Festival at Tonozuka–Himezuka Burial Mounds, Shibayama Niōson Temple, and Shibayama Park

The Shibayama Haniwa Festival celebrates Shibayama Town’s history as 'the town of haniwa'—inspired by more than 500 ancient burial mounds that once stood here. This is the town’s largest event, starting with the mystical 'Descent Ceremony.' Local children dress up as ancient people, creating a scene both charming and majestic. Traditional music and shrine maiden dances evoke the atmosphere of ancient times. The 'Exchange Ceremony' highlights cultural interaction between the ancient and the modern, featuring the performance of 'Shiramasu Konaya Dance,' a Prefecture-designated Intangible Folk Cultural Asset. The festival concludes with the grand 'Ascension Ceremony.' Through these experiences, visitors can feel the intersection of past and present. Simultaneous events in the Shibayama Niōson Temple and park area include an industry and commerce fair, a cultural festival, stage performances, local produce sales, a mini-zoo, food booths, and family-friendly activities.
