This exhibition delves into 'Hyakka-fu' (A Hundred Flowers), the renowned woodblock print series (1920–22) by Hisui Sugiura, a pioneer of modern graphic design in Japan. For the first time, 112 original drawings—discovered in Kawagoe and later found in various locations—are gathered together and displayed alongside the corresponding prints. Through newly uncovered materials, visitors can trace the creative process and appreciate Sugiura’s exceptional draftsmanship, which grounded his designs in careful observation. This rare opportunity re-examines the genesis of his masterpiece and offers significant insight into the history of design.
