Featuring new works created for the occasion, Gunzo is a solo exhibition by Yuuki Koyano, an emerging artist at the forefront of contemporary Nihonga. Reinterpreting traditional Japanese art and aesthetics through a contemporary lens, Koyano creates paintings that bridge historical references and a distinctly modern visual language. Drawing inspiration from ukiyo-e and Zen, the exhibition presents compositions filled with stylized figures. Recurring motifs such as spirals, symbolizing the origins and mystery of life, and densely populated scenes that evoke the interconnectedness of all living things are brought together through vivid colors and playful forms. Beneath their bright, accessible surfaces lies a quiet reflection on life, human relationships and the hope for peace. Bringing together new works created especially for this exhibition, Gunzo offers a fresh look at Koyano's unique approach to contemporary Nihonga.
