Minato City was an early adopter of Western-style architecture, influenced by the establishment of foreign embassies at the end of the Edo period and by aristocrats and business leaders building Western-style residences on former samurai estates during the Meiji era and after. This exhibition traces the modernization and Westernization of daily life through drawings and actual examples of Western buildings and furniture from the Meiji, Taisho, and Showa periods, focusing on Minato. It also looks back at the Western furniture industry in Shiba, which supplied pieces to the residences of aristocrats and business magnates.
