Puccini's Tosca, staged by the New National Theatre Tokyo in the Opera Palace, is set in Rome in 1800. A singer and a republican painter are caught between love and political turmoil under a ruthless police chief, and the arias "Recondita armonia" and "Vissi d'arte" are among its highlights. Sung in Italian with Japanese and English surtitles, conducted by Donato Renzetti and directed by Antonello Madau-Diaz, with Carmen Giannattasio, Saimir Pirgu and Dalibor Jenis in the lead roles.
