The Rise of a Sengoku Star: How the Media Portrayed Toyotomi Hideyoshi
July 22 – September 13, 2026
This mini exhibition explores how Toyotomi Hideyoshi was depicted in printed media during the Edo and Meiji periods, with a focus on the popular chronicle 'The Taikoki.' Born in the early Edo era and widely read, 'The Taikoki' and similar works shaped Hideyoshi's image for generations. During the Meiji era, when self-made success was celebrated, Hideyoshi’s journey from humble origins to ruler made him a symbol of hope, appearing in children's books and various publications. Through books and documents from these periods, the exhibition delves into how Hideyoshi’s legacy spread through print culture.
