Takiguchi Shuzo: Writing and Drawing

The Ishibashi Foundation owns 163 works of art (including collaborations with others) by Takiguchi Shuzo (1903-79), an exemplary poet of the Showa period and an art critic. Takiguchi began working seriously on creating two- and three-dimensional works in the 1960s. They can be positioned as following his composing poems strongly influenced by Surrealism, from the 1920s on, and his subsequent practice of critiquing contemporary Japanese and French art. This exhibition considers his entire range of activities, including art criticism, poetry, and supervising exhibitions, to explore the intentions behind his works and their character. The 130 works in this exhibition also include work by artists connected to Takiguchi: Paul Klee, Joan Miró, and Joseph Cornell from overseas and Fukushima Hideko, Yamaguchi Katsuhiro, and Kusama Yayoi from Japan, among others.
