Ota Ward features distinctive landscapes such as Omori, known for its seaweed farming since the Edo period, and Haneda, which flourished as a fishing village. These scenes were frequently depicted in ukiyo-e prints and illustrated books as iconic images of Edo. As Tokyo urbanized during the Meiji era and beyond, the simple fishing villages and beautiful coastal areas continued to captivate people. This exhibition traces the origins of Ota Ward’s appeal by showcasing artworks from the ward’s collection that illustrate seaside scenes in Ota and its surroundings.
