'Literati painting,' or art created for personal enjoyment by scholars and officials rather than professional artists, made its way to eastern Japan during the Edo period. Painters such as Bunchō Tani and Kazan Watanabe, along with their mentors and peers, traveled through the region, fostering connections with local merchants, cultural figures, and temples. They exchanged paintings and calligraphy during gatherings and celebrations. This exhibition traces the activities of literati painters active in Kanto during the mid-to-late Edo period, showcasing their cultural exchanges and love for the arts.
