Oriol Vilanova "Original Copy"

2F Piramide Bldg., 6-6-9 Roppongi, Minato-ku, Tokyo 106-0032
⌖ Open in Maps ↗KOTARO NUKAGA Roppongi is pleased to present 'Original Copy,' the first solo exhibition in Japan by Oriol Vilanova, from August 1 through September 12, 2026. Vilanova has made the rounds of flea markets and antique fairs around the world, and, using the postcards he has collected over many years as his primary material, he creates works that enter into a quiet dialogue with their sites. In 2023 he took part in 'Economy and Love,' a two-person exhibition with Stefan Brüggemann held at our gallery. At the 61st Venice Biennale International Art Exhibition, currently on view(May 9 – November 22, 2026, Venice), he is presenting Los restos(2026), a large-scale installation in which a vast accumulation of postcards envelops the entire space of the Spanish Pavilion. These achievements have earned him firm international recognition.
In this exhibition, new works composed of postcards will unfold in response to the gallery space in Roppongi. What do these modest printed objects, issued in countless copies and passed from hand to hand, reflect back to us today? We hope you will come face to face, in the exhibition space, with the question quietly posed by the title 'Original Copy.'
On the occasion of this exhibition, we are honored to welcome Daisuke Miyatsu as guest curator and to present his contributed essay. Miyatsu took part in the residency program of the Delfina Foundation(London)during the same period as Vilanova and co-created a work with him. We invite you to read his text alongside the exhibition.
