New National Theatre Opera: Peter Grimes
November 23 – December 5, 2026
Set in a fishing village, this opera follows the story of the lonely fisherman Peter Grimes, who is suspected by the villagers of murdering his apprentice and becomes increasingly isolated. Exploring themes of poverty, child abuse, and the conflict between the individual and the community, the production depicts isolation, mass psychology, hope, and despair in a gripping atmosphere. Britten's powerful and beautiful music vividly conveys the moods of the sea and storms while skillfully expressing the characters’ inner emotions, delivering a profoundly dramatic experience.
