Seven leading Japanese string players, including violinist Kei Shirai and cellist Nobuko Yamazaki, trace the transformation of late Romanticism from Brahms to Richard Strauss. The ensemble grows from five to six to seven players across Brahms's String Quintet No. 2, the Prelude from Strauss's opera Capriccio, and Strauss's Metamorphosen in its string septet version.
