The Meiji period marked a turning point for Japanese metalworkers. As the demand for sword fittings declined, artisans applied their extraordinary skills to decorative arts, creating refined works for the Imperial Household and international exhibitions. This exhibition features metalwork associated with the Imperial Family, including objects once owned by Emperor Meiji and Empress Shoken. From ornamental sculptures and vases to writing implements and bonbonnieres, these exquisitely crafted works—along with modern metalwork dedicated to Meiji Jingu—highlight the exceptional artistry and craftsmanship of Japanese metalwork.
