Street kamishibai, paper theater, is said to have emerged in the early Showa period. Printed kamishibai later developed as a medium for education and public outreach. Because it could be mass-produced, it became a widely used means of communication, serving both classroom education and public information campaigns before and after World War 2. Drawing primarily from National Showa Memorial Museum's kamishibai collection, this exhibition traces the history of printed kamishibai, exploring its changing roles and the impact it had on Japanese society.
