SMP GALLERY is pleased to present Wild Extension, a solo exhibition by contemporary craft artist Koudai Makino. A pioneer of Botanical Dye Metalwork—a unique practice of coloring metal with natural plant dyes—Makino is widely recognized for his organic Moon Series, inspired by the gentle forms of the moon, as well as his vibrant, lightweight aluminum tableware, admired by collectors in Japan and abroad. For this exhibition, Makino turns his attention to sculptural works in iron and bronze, materials that gradually develop a rich patina over time. While the materials have changed, his artistic language remains unmistakably the same—free, light, and deeply connected to nature. Inspired by the abundant landscapes of Yamagata, Makino transforms the colors and forms found in plants into works of quiet beauty. We invite you to experience this exhibition, showcasing the essence of his artistic vision.
