Gohannan-e and Oeshiki Ceremony at Kyounin Temple
November 11, 2026
This event is held to honor and perform a memorial service for Saint Nichiren. The highlight is a children's procession of girls, known as 'chigo,' who walk from the monument of the saint to the temple grounds, each chanting sutras. Among them, the eldest takes on the role of the 'doji,' or leader. After parading through the neighborhood, a ceremony takes place in the main hall where, in the finale, the doji recites a 'festival address' expressing gratitude and recounting the saint's history. Tradition holds that children who participate in the procession are blessed with good health.
