Sano Akari: Illuminating the Town's Temples and Shrines
November 14–22, 2026
Sano Akari: Illuminating the Town's Temples and Shrines is a light-up event held at two venues in Sano City, Tochigi Prefecture: Sano Yakuyoke Daishi Temple and Asahimori Tenmangu Shrine. The historic Sano Yakuyoke Daishi, founded in 944, is renowned for prayers of protection and is considered one of the three great temples of the Kanto region. Asahimori Tenmangu enshrines the deity of learning, Sugawara no Michizane, and features a lantern-lit approach. In 2026, Asahimori Tenmangu's lights will be on daily from November 14th to 22nd, while Sano Yakuyoke Daishi will be illuminated on November 14th, 15th, and from 20th to 22nd, for a total of five days. The event transforms these historic grounds and pathways into a magical, illuminated spectacle.
