Industrialist Kihachiro Okura (1837–1928), who led a wide range of modern enterprises, was deeply concerned by the destruction of temples during the haibutsu kishaku movement, as well as the dispersal and overseas export of Buddhist artworks. In response, efforts were devoted to collecting and preserving Japanese and Asian antiquities, including Buddhist art. In 1917, Okura Shukokan Museum of Fine Arts was founded to share these works with the public and promote their cultural value. This exhibition traces the development of Buddhist art through works from the museum’s collection. Part 1: July 28 – August 30 Part 2: September 1 – September 27
