Ancient Near Eastern Architecture and Urban Design Through Models

From homes and temples to palaces, tombs, and cities, people have been building places to live, gather, and worship since long before the rise of civilization. The Ancient Near East is home to some of the earliest known examples of urban life and is often regarded as the birthplace of the world's first cities. Through more than thirty scale models and full-scale reconstructions, this exhibition explores the architecture and city-building traditions of the Ancient Near East. Featured sites include Göbekli Tepe, often described as the world's oldest known temple; Uruk, one of the earliest cities in history; and Babylon, the city associated with the Tower of Babel. The models provide a unique opportunity to see entire cities and archaeological sites from above, while the full-scale reconstructions offer an immersive glimpse into ancient homes and tombs. During the summer holidays, a range of family-friendly programs—including workshops, hands-on activities, and mystery tours—will invite visitors of all ages to discover the world of ancient city building.
