Aoyama Star Lantern Festival 2026
September 11–13, 2026
The Aoyama Star Lantern Festival is a traditional Bon event that was held from the Edo period through the early Meiji era for about a month each lunar July in the Aoyama and Hyakunincho areas. Lanterns attached to the ends of tall bamboo poles were held high, creating the appearance of countless stars in the night sky—hence the name 'Star Lantern'. This custom was so beloved by the people of Edo that it was depicted in ukiyo-e prints by Utagawa Hiroshige II. The festival is being revived in the hope of reestablishing it as a cherished Aoyama tradition.
