36th Ornithology Lecture: 'The Recovery of the Albatross—From the Brink of Extinction to 10,000 Birds'
November 7, 2026
Once driven to near extinction by feather hunting and believed extinct by 1949, the albatross was rediscovered in small numbers on Torishima Island in the Izu Islands in 1951 and subsequently protected. The speaker resumed monitoring their breeding in autumn 1976, continuing for 42 years. The estimated population, fewer than 200 in the first year, reached 5,165 in the final survey. Research by the Yamashina Institute for Ornithology confirmed that the predicted recovery to 10,000 birds by 2026 was achieved earlier than expected.
