From October 31, the Chiba Prefectural Museum of Art hosts 'The World of Chiba-kun,' celebrating 20 years of the beloved mascot Chiba-kun and illustrator Chiharu Sakazaki’s creative journey. The exhibition features the history and future of Chiba-kun, born from the shape of Chiba Prefecture and widely recognized by residents as its friendly symbol. See a showcase of Sakazaki’s art, including official promotional works and new pieces, such as the large folding screens depicting 'Lucky-Chiba-kun,' produced in collaboration with local craftsmen. Highlights include a wooden Japan map puzzle with Chiba-kun’s face added to each prefecture, interactive elements, and original picture books like 'Chiba-kun’s Alphabet Adventure.' The exhibit also spotlights Sakazaki’s other character creations, such as the Suica Penguin, and explores her career as an illustrator and author. The venue, creatively designed with over 1,200 cardboard boxes, aims to evoke the theme 'Welcoming and Carrying into the Future.' During the exhibition, the Chiba-kun STORE will offer books, calendars, and limited-edition merchandise. Special events include artist talks and signings by Sakazaki (advance application required), meet-and-greets with Chiba-kun, dance events, interactive tours, and sketching sessions. Daily hands-on workshops are also available for all ages, and a concurrent exhibition of major red-themed works is on display. For event schedules and latest updates, check the museum’s website. Exhibition runs October 31, 2026 to January 17, 2027. Admission: Adults 1,000 yen; high school & college students 500 yen; group discounts available. Free for junior high students and younger, seniors 65+, and one caregiver per person with disability certificate. Admission is free to all on November 3 (Culture Day). Accessible by foot from Chiba Minato Station (JR Keiyo Line/Monorail); on-site free parking available.
