Autumn Leaves at Kanpukuji Temple
November 20 – December 10, 2026
Myoko-san Kanpukuji is a tranquil, historic temple surrounded by forest, famous for its spectacular autumn foliage. Visitors can enjoy beautiful fall colors throughout the grounds, from the area in front of the water pavilion and the stone steps leading to the Kannon Hall, to the main hall, the statue of Kobo Daishi, and near the grave of Tadataka Ino. Often used as a filming location for TV dramas and movies, you may recognize its scenery. The best time to view the autumn leaves is usually from mid-November to early December, but even after the peak, when the fallen leaves cover the stone steps, the atmosphere remains charming and popular. Known alongside Kawasaki Daishi in Kanagawa and Nishiarai Daishi in Kyoto as one of Japan’s three major temples dedicated to warding off bad luck, Kanpukuji offers a unique opportunity to combine fall foliage viewing with traditional temple visits and collecting temple stamps.
