Special Exhibition of the Principal Buddha Statue at Shuzenji Temple
November 1–30, 2026
The principal statue of Dainichi Nyorai at Shuzenji Temple will be specially displayed for public viewing. Usually only visible behind a curtain in the main hall, visitors can now admire the statue up close in the treasure hall. The statue was donated to Shuzenji by Hojo Masako—known as the ‘Nun Shogun’—to commemorate the seventh anniversary of her son Minamoto no Yoriie’s death, the second shogun of the Kamakura shogunate. Created by the renowned Kei school sculptor Jikkei, it is an important Buddhist statue. This exhibition invites visitors to reflect on the fate of Yoriie and his mother’s feelings for her lost son.
