Special Exhibition: The Kabasakiji Temple and Unkei – Two Statues of Dainichi Nyorai
Saturday, October 24, 2026
This special exhibition features two seated statues of Dainichi Nyorai, believed to be the work of the renowned Kamakura-era sculptor Unkei, focusing on cultural properties and materials related to the now-lost Kabasakiji Temple in Ashikaga, Tochigi. For the first time, both the Important Cultural Property 'Seated Wooden Statue of Dainichi Nyorai' from the Hanzomon Museum and the Dainichi Nyorai statue from Kōtokuji Temple will be displayed side by side, offering a rare opportunity to view both masterpieces together. The exhibition also presents ancient documents and related materials that convey the history of Kabasakiji Temple and the Ashikaga clan, as well as insights into Unkei’s activities during the early Kamakura period. In addition, special events will be held: a lecture on Saturday, November 7, and a special talk on Saturday, December 5.
